“Freedom Gained: French Official Rescued from Niger Security Forces.
The French government has announced the release of a French national held since 2017 by Niger security forces for his alleged ties to Islamic extremist groups.
The man, Hamza Boumerdassi, was arrested in the city of Agadez in April 2017 and later transferred to Niamey, the capital of Niger. Boumerdassi had reportedly been in contact with Islamic extremists in Mali and was accused of providing material support to Islamist fighters.
In a statement issued last week, the French government welcomed Boumerdassi’s release and thanked the Niger authorities for their efforts in securing his freedom. Boumerdassi was returned to France late last week, where he was welcomed by his family.
The French government has stressed the importance of due process in all cases, and said it had carefully monitored Boumerdassi’s detention in Niger. The government also expressed appreciation for the successful completion of the legal procedures carried out in Niger.
This release marks a positive step for French-Niger relations, as it is the latest in a series of successful negotiations with disgruntled authorities. Just last month, the two countries resolved a decade-old dispute over the Niger uranium mine, which had been sealed off by Niger authorities since 2010.
Boumerdassi’s release also shows the success of French diplomatic efforts in the region. France has ramped up its anti-terror operations in the Sahel region, notably in Mali and Niger, over the past two years as part of its broader counter-terrorism strategy. This latest incident is likely to further bolster the collaboration between French and Niger authorities in tackling the Islamist threat in the region.
