Roz Brewer Exits Walgreens: CEO Leaves After Two Years of Leadership

After more than two years at the helm of Walgreens, CEO Roz Brewer has stepped down from her position effective immediately. Brewer took the position in February of 2019, and was the first ever African American to take over the top spot at the iconic American drugstore chain. She was responsible for guiding the company through the coronavirus pandemic, as well as other critical times. Brewer had a successful career prior to her time with the company, having served as chief operating officer for Starbucks and COO for grocery retail giant, Sam’s Club. She had shown enthusiasm for her role with Walgreens, often discussing her plans to revolutionize the company’s digital capabilities and focus on customers. Despite her successes, Walgreens recently posted lower-than-expected sales growth in its most recent quarter. The announcement of Brewer’s departure caused shares of Walgreens to take a dip in the market. CEO Walgreens, Stefano Pessina, will temporarily step into the role of CEO until a permanent successor can be found. Pessina expressed his gratitude for Brewer’s service with the company and noted that he looks forward to working with her to ensure a successful transition. Brewer has not yet commented on her departure from the CEO position, but it is expected that the search for her replacement will take some time. No matter what the future holds for Brewer, it is clear that her short tenure as head of Walgreens will make a lasting impression on the company and its operations.
