The U.S Senate has today confirmed Martin O’Malley as the next head of the Social Security Administration (SSA). The 67-year-old O’Malley had been nominated by president Joe Biden on April 15, 2021 and was confirmed with a 51-41 vote along party lines. O’Malley previously served as the governor of Maryland from 2007 to 2015 and since then has been active in social justice causes. He is also a former mayor of the city of Baltimore, Maryland. As the head of SSA, O’Malley will be in charge of a long list of social programs, including Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, and Medicare.
