“Hearts Torn Apart: Witness Recounts Horror Following Israeli Attack on Gaza Refugee Camp

The horror and trauma of this week’s Israeli strike in Gaza was described in vivid detail by witnesses on the ground, many of whom were children running from the area with frightened faces. One witness, 16-year-old Mohammed Nashwan, testimonted to the media that the aftermath of the strike on the Al-Shati refugee camp was mayhem. “Some of the children were carrying other injured children,” he said shaking his head. With his own home destroyed, and his family evacuated from the area, there was heartbreaking chaos and fear in the area. As Nashwan recounted the incident, he said he had not seen anything like it in his lifetime. He described seeing dead bodies being carried away and homes being bombed. He described the scene as “really horrific,” and “horrible.” The strike was allegedly targeting two Islamic Jihad leaders from Gaza City, a leader of the militant al-Quds Brigades, and an operative. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the strike came after days of rocket fire towards Israeli towns. But following the strike, the United Nations called the attack an “outrageous violation of international law.” Astonishingly, the airstrike had occurred only kilometers away from a UN-sponsored refugee camp. Thel unleashed destruction of the strike has added to the emotion of an already volatile situation, paiinfully impacting the people of Gaza this week. Images of frightened children running for their lives away from the area are seared deep in the minds of those affected. With no understanding of the politics of the situation, Nashwan’s thoughts were simply scattered and raw. “What wrong did they do?” he asked.
