“Vietnam’s Underhanded Cyber Attacks Revealed: US Officials, CNN Targeted
As reported by CNN, a new investigation has found that Vietnam made multiple attempts to hack into emails and accounts associated with US officials. The probe was headed by X-Probe, an independent cyber security company.
The investigation revealed that the Vietnamese government was behind the attacks, using a range of sophisticated methods including phishing, malicious software and spearfishing. The hackers targeted a number of senior US officials to gain access to sensitive documents and emails related to US foreign policy and security.
While the attack was stopped before any harm was done, the probe found that Vietnam has a history of using cyber attacks to gain intelligence and interfere in foreign affairs.
Commenting on the findings, senior director of X-Probe, Guy Smith, said: “This is the latest in a series of attacks launched by the Vietnam government to undermine the US Government’s national security and foreign policy agenda. We believe that this is part of a much larger campaign of cyber espionage and malicious activity which includes political interference in foreign affairs.”
The probe also found that Vietnam has been actively recruiting hackers and investing in cyber warfare capabilities in order to gain strategic advantage.
The revelation has sparked further concerns over foreign interference in US politics and elections, as well as other national security matters. It is yet another reminder of the threat posed by cyber attacks and the importance of protecting sensitive data.
This investigation serves as a stark reminder of the importance of cyber security and the need for governments to improve the security of their networks and systems. The US must take steps to ensure that it is prepared to defend itself against cyber threats from foreign adversaries, as this is likely to remain an issue for some time.
