“Alabama Auto Workers Unite as Detroit’s Big Three Strike On!
On Tuesday, October 1st, the United Automobile Workers (UAW) strike against Mercedes-Benz supplier in Alabama began in solidarity with the ongoing strike against Detroit’s Big Three automakers.
At the Mercedes-Benz Alabama auto plant, UAW members have been protesting in support of workers in Detroit who are fighting an uphill battle against General Motors, Ford, and Fiat-Chrysler for higher wages, better health and safety protections, and the right to unionize.
The workers at the plant, which produces transmission systems, components for body structure, and other parts, have been on strike since August 15th over a number of labor issues, including the right to organize a labor union.
The move is part of the UAW’s “Solidarity Across America” campaign, which calls for solidarity among car workers everywhere. The strike in Alabama is helping to demonstrate to the Big Three automakers that UAW members are willing to stick together to fight for their rights.
“We need to stay together and keep fighting for fair wages, health and safety protections, and the right to organize a union,” UAW Vice President Carmen Boff said in a statement. “It’s clear that the only way to achieve a good contract is to stay united and strong.”
UAW members have been holding rallies and protests across Alabama throughout the duration of the strike, and they have received support from state officials such as U.S. Senator Doug Jones.
If the UAW continues to maintain solidarity across the country, they may prove successful in their fight with the Big Three automakers. With the Mercedes-Benz supplier strike in Alabama, UAW members are sending a clear message that they are serious about winning a fair contract.
